Reflections from Heather Dorzinski, summer 2004
I really enjoyed my internship at Citizens Alert this summer. Apart from all the wonderful people I have met,I was introduced to a world of social justice issues I didn't know existed. I valued the first hand learning experience Citizens Alert provided for me. I had the opportunity to attend a Police Board Meeting, speak on CAN-TV (Chicago's Cable Access Network) and work with one of the national coordinators for the fall Police Accountability conference in Portland. I was allowed the resources to research several important issues including Tasers and Civilian Review Boards for police departments. I got the opportunity to attend the Citizens Alert annual fundraiser which was held at the Chicago Historical Society where I was able to meet several people involved in the police accountability community. I got the chance to speak to people who had suffered instances of police brutality which helped me get a better sense of the importance and urgency of police accountability. Most importantly, I saw that police accountability is an important social justice issue. Police accountability is a difficult subject that requires very brave people to address it. I am glad I had the opportunity to spend the summer with Citizens Alert.
