Citizens Alert

Citizens Alert is Chicago's most experienced police accountability organization working for systemic change in law enforcement agencies and advocating for victims of excessive force or police misconduct.

The goals of Citizens Alert are to make law enforcement agencies accountable to the public by:

• Acting as civil rights advocates for victims of excessive force and abuse;
• Providing information, counsel and referrals;
• Monitoring police conduct and policies;
• Building coalitions to involve other organizations in specific police issues;
• Recommending policy changes that encourage more humane and effective law enforcement;
• Educating the public on criminal justice matters.

WHAT WE DO

VICTIM ADVOCACY

Citizens Alert provides information and assistance to victims of police abuse and harassment, makes appropriate referrals and if requested accompany victim while they file the complaint.

SUPPORT FOR SURVIVORS

For the families of victims of deadly force and other deaths in custody, Citizens Alert is a liaison with authorities, cut through red tape and links families together through coalition efforts.

POLICE BOARD MONITORING

Voicing community concerns and citizen complaints while promoting policy changes, Citizens Alert has attended Police Board meetings since the early seventies. Accountability sessions with the Superintendent of police are held periodically.

Volunteers Needed!

For over 42 years volunteers have been the driving force behind Citizens Alert by donating their time and talents to work toward more humane law enforcement.

There are opportunities for volunteers to:

• Attend meetings  
• Be a board member
• Work with victims of police misconduct
• Fundraising
